- Microsoft Word is Microsoft's word processing software.
- It is a component of the Microsoft Office package; however, it is also sold as a standalone product.
- The latest releases are Word 2007 for Windows and Word 2008 for Mac OS.
- Concepts and ideas of Word were brought from Bravo, the original GUI word processor in 1983.
- By then, with increasing requirement and elapse of time, many versions of Microsoft Word are developed: Ex: Word 1981-89, Word 1998, Word 2003, Word 2007 etc.
- Features:
o Word has a built-in spell checker, thesaurus (vocabulary), dictionary.
o Has Office Assistant and utilities for transferring, copying, pasting and editing text.
o Bullets and numbering for paragraph formatting.
o Users can also create tables and depending on the version, Word can perform simple calculations. Formulae are supported as well.
o From Microsoft Office 2003, AutoCorrect was added. Ex: First letter of every sentence is automatically transformed to upper case letter.
o Sub and Super-script facilities.
o Users can insert auto text where necessary.
o Word has many built-in templates that can be used to create standard documents.
o Working with Header/Footer, pictures, page numbers etc make Word documents interactive.
o One of the important features of MS-Word is Cross-Version compatibility and support for other relevant document formats. Ex: XML, Templates, Web etc.
